New Star Wars Trilogy Reportedly in the Works

Simon Kinberg is developing a new Star Wars trilogy but it remains unclear whether it will expand the Skywalker story or launch something entirely new.

Star Wars has a strong foothold on Disney+, but its true roots are in cinema. Now Lucasfilm seems ready to bring the galaxy back to the big screen in a major way. Alongside the feature films already announced for the next few years, a new report suggests even more are coming and this time it could involve the Skywalker Saga itself.

According to Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr., Lucasfilm has signed Star Wars Rebels co-creator Simon Kinberg to develop, write, and produce a new Star Wars trilogy. Kinberg is no stranger to the franchise. He helped shape Rebels into one of the most respected projects in modern Star Wars storytelling, and he also has major blockbuster experience from writing several X-Men films.

The unexpected part of the report is the suggestion that Kinberg’s new project might not be entirely separate from the past. Fleming Jr. claims that Kinberg could be developing Episodes X–XII, continuing the Skywalker Family Saga beyond The Rise of Skywalker. If true, it would be a major shift in Lucasfilm’s current direction. When Episode IX released in 2019, it was presented as the final chapter of the main saga. However, the mixed reception to The Rise of Skywalker left lingering questions and perhaps unfinished business.

A continuation could also tie into recent developments around Daisy Ridley’s upcoming Rey film. That project, set years after Palpatine’s final defeat, has reportedly faced internal challenges. It’s possible Lucasfilm sees value in building a broader framework around Rey’s story rather than leaving her as a standalone thread. It’s also possible, as some fans would argue, that the financial draw of the Skywalker name is too strong for Disney to fully leave behind.

There is some conflicting information. Fleming Jr. notes that some insiders dispute the idea that Kinberg is working on new Skywalker saga films. Instead, they claim he is developing a completely original trilogy, designed to stand alongside the already announced Star Wars projects without being tied to existing family lineages or established timelines.

Right now, there’s no clear confirmation either way. It’s possible Lucasfilm is keeping options open: Kinberg could be tasked with pitching multiple ideas, with the decision to either revisit the Skywalker story or start a new saga depending on the strength of the concept.

What’s clear is that Star Wars is once again moving aggressively into theatres, not just Disney+. Whether Kinberg’s trilogy continues the story of Anakin’s bloodline or sets the stage for something entirely new, it will carry heavy expectations. For now, all we can do is wait and keep a close eye on what’s shaping up to be the next major chapter in Star Wars history.
