After years of uncertainty, the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is still in development but fans are still waiting for real updates.
First announced during the PlayStation Showcase in 2021, the KOTOR remake was originally in development at Aspyr. However, after reports of delays and internal issues, the project shifted to Saber Interactive. Saber has since split from Embracer Group, taking the KOTOR remake with them.
In March 2025, Saber Interactive CCO Tim Willits stated the studio’s announced projects are “still in development,” which would include KOTOR. No specific updates, trailers, or release windows have been given since the 2021 teaser, and the original trailer has been quietly delisted from Sony’s YouTube channel. It’s unclear if that’s a sign of deeper development trouble or just a licensing issue, but the silence around the project has made fans nervous.
The KOTOR remake is still confirmed as a timed console exclusive for PS5, with a later release expected for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
The original Knights of the Old Republic, released in 2003, is set 4,000 years before the Skywalker Saga. It follows a mysterious Force user caught in a brutal war between the Republic and Darth Malak’s Sith forces. Known for its memorable characters like Bastila Shan and HK-47, branching story paths, and strong moral choice system, KOTOR quickly became one of the most respected Star Wars games ever made.
While Saber Interactive has not revealed how closely they will stick to the original gameplay, it’s expected that the Light Side/Dark Side morality system, strategic real-time combat with pause mechanics, and party-based exploration across multiple planets will all return.
No footage from the remake has been shown since the initial teaser, and there are no confirmed changes to story, structure, or combat. It remains to be seen how Saber will balance modern updates with maintaining the spirit of BioWare’s classic RPG.
Until we hear more, Star Wars fans will have to keep waiting — but the hope for a return to the Old Republic era is still very much alive.
