YouTuber Frags of War has raised a question that’s on a lot of players’ minds: could Star Wars: Zero Company finally be the game that challenges XCOM’s hold on the tactics genre?
In his latest video, he discusses the pedigree behind Bit Reactor and Respawn, highlighting how the teams’ experience with strategy games could give Zero Company an advantage. He explains how the Star Wars license might push the game beyond the traditional tactics audience, giving it a much broader reach than most games in the genre usually manage.
Frags of War breaks down the early details we have, from the focus on squad customization to the role of The Den as your base of operations. He points out that although the reveal trailer was mostly cinematic, there are promising signs that the game will combine a strong narrative with flexible character creation and a large interactive galaxy map. He also notes concerns about how closely the gameplay will stick to the XCOM formula, and whether Zero Company will have enough new ideas to stand on its own.
It’s an honest and thoughtful look at what Zero Company might become, with the clear understanding that while Star Wars gives it an edge, success isn’t guaranteed.
